The text contains very nice observations! Very good article!
If we don’t sneak into the area, our giant ball possession ends up useless.
It seems Newell’s Old Boys is the only place where Tata manages to do good. They used to play amazing soccer under his coaching.
But he “crashed the Ferrari”, so to speak, in Barça, didn’t he? We must clinch a title. Martino’s gotta go.

Joinville is constantly tangled with Minas Gerais clubs in mob-related, shameful episodes… Last year they were on a race with América, who owns the Horto stadium, for a spot in Série A.
A weird court decision took six points from América, claiming they lined an irregular player up, and then Joinville outnumbered the team from Belo Horizonte in points, and a few rounds later, got promoted. América still remains in Série B.

… Now this violent stuff against Atlético. This player Anselmo didn’t even get a yellow card! Hope we’re able to play good without Dátolo, win the next games ahead and Lucas Pratto nets the balls he receives.

  38. Profile photo of Hilton Neves

🙁 It’s very hard even to look at.

If you guys could get some scenes from this league’s last round, you’ll see that Dátolo scored a wonderful goal on 9_20, when we hosted Flamengo at Horto ballpark.

  43. He cut Maxi Rodríguez and Mancuello off. I didn’t like that. Wish Martino refused Lamela, Agüero and Pastore instead.
But i liked the fact that he kept Otamendi on the list. Btw, get well soon, Musacchio!

  44. Bad coach. Should’ve called Caniggia up in 98. But excellent player! At some time, he was even called ‘El Kaiser’, deservingly.
    ¡Viva Passarella!

  46. Messi is the closest to Maradona in all ways. But both are equally brilliant in their technique. One world cup win for messi & he will be above Maradona for sure

  47. Finally, some good news! After the tragic Musacchio’s injury at the defense… We can say the striking dep’t conserved a bit of our future.
I hate such Italian harassment, so to speak… you know, it’s just obnoxious the fact that they won two World Cups with players born in Argentina… Damn! In 34 the Czechs were very close to win… and the moronic Orsi ties the game. And then, in 06 the Azzurra signs Camoranesi, who also clinches the trophy.

In the world that we live in, we’ve gotta wait to see whether Mateo keeps his word. Take those things with a grain of salt. But it looks like this good striker wanna do it.

  48. Very good interview! Carlitos overcame lots of obstacles to reach that performing level. A fine example coming from a troubled area. And most of all, the guy knows how to play. Not a Burruchaga or Valdano. But, imho, he still can be very useful to the Nat’l Team.
Wish him good luck on his return, may he score many goals and do many nice assists!

  49. Except Tevez inclusion I am totally happy with Tata’s selection. Di Santo or Icardi should have been included instead of Tevez and Tata should have added Dybala thereby making it a 23 man squad.

Goalkeepers: As usual Romero will be our no 1. Very happy to see Rulli getting a call up and tbh I never thought he will get a call up prior to copa. Haven’t seen much of Guzman still I believe Guzman ahead of Willy is a good selection.

Defenders: Great to see Musacchio and Orban back in the squad. I personally wanted Basanta in the squad but since tata have picked Orban there was no room for Basanta and I am ok with it. As usual Zaba, Garay, Otamendi, Rojo all have been called up. Roncaglia is good in attack but not that good defensively but still he is a hardworking player and not a big deal because he will only be Zaba’s back up and I think we only have Roncaglia as Zaba’s back up. Peruzzi haven’t started a single match for Boca and not sure whether he is injured. Demi has been in fine form but he isn’t suitable for Tata’s highline defense and same applies for Fede as well. May be he will add another cb from domestic league and according to Clarin Funes Mori will be included.

Midfielders: As usual Mascherano, Biglia, Enzo, Pastore, Pereyra, Di Maria, Banega all have been included. Banega has been doing a good job recently and he will be a good addition as a squad player. According to Clarin Gago and Maxi might be called up. Heard that Maxi has been in good form recently the duo can be good squad players.

Forwards: As usual Messi, Pipita, Aguero, Tevez have been called up. I thought Lavezzi’s Argentina career was over after he wasn’t picked by Tata during the previous friendly matches. I don’t think Lavezzi has been included in the squad as a forward, he might have been picked as Di Maria’s back up. People might agree or disagree however Lavezzi is a quality hardworking player who is offensively and defensively good and he gives that necessary extra pace to our attack. He can come on as a second half sub and run any defense in the world even at the age of 29.

Sabella used to pick players like Guinazu, Brana, Clemente, Desbato, Seba Dominzguez, Di Santo, Palacio, Sosa, Lavezzi etc during those difficult matches against tough South American opponents and they use to do well. I think we need couple of players like these from domestic league who are comfortable in tough conditions because as we all know teams like brazil will be playing more physical game as they did in 2007 Copa.

After Martino taking over from Sabella the posts which I saw the most is “Until Copa, Martino shouldn’t make huge changes to the squad which has been already built by Sabella and he did the right thing by excluding World Cup players like Andujar, Orion, Hugo, Demi, Ricky, Augusto, Palacio and I only disagree with him for excluding Basanta still managers will have their personal favorites and he have added Rojo and Orban so I am ok with it. But now most of them are worried seeing the old faces again. During early Sabella era I was never happy with Sabella’s team selection but still supported and trusted him and I was and is never a big fan of Tata but I will be supporting Tata just like I supported Sabella. Anyway this is just my personal opinion and opinions will differ.

Unlike Sabella, Tata have pleased many fans by his team selection and it’s now time for Tata to lead our team like Sabella did.

    Vamos Martino Vamos Argentina <3

    • Good analysis, Midhun! Concerning Nahuel Guzmán, he played awesome for Newell’s Old Boys in Copa Libertadores ’13. He just made semi-finals again, this time with Tigres.
Not many changes from the last eight years. Brazil is coming heavy upon us with a physical game, like you said. Colombia still allows voids into their defense. Except that the Cafeteros improved a little bit, smarters in the midfield; and Chile has a very good team, except for Mena(who got a new opportunity in Cruzeiro, yet is still living a bad phase).
      Aguante la AC!

  50. please add paulo dybala

  51. paulo dybala is the greet

  52. Positives:

    1. Young and promising Geronimo Rulli instead of Willy.
    2. Garay and Musacchio back. Also Orban.
    3. No Demi or FF.
    4. Best possible Midfield.

    Negatives:

    1. A new face in attack. Icardi and Dybala should have been included.

tbh I was not expecting Vietto as his playing style is almost similar to KUN and Tevez (although I even didn’t like his inclusion). All of them play as a left-wide forward to middle.
But considering Higuain’s inconsistency, a typical No # 9 like Icardi or (Di Santo/Ulloha) was must in the team.
Also as Messi will start as Right-wide forward but if our center Forwards fails (which is very much possible) then Dybala could have played as Right-wide forward to make place Messi in the middle.

    2. Dybala’s decision should have been rewarded and that would have been worth taking risk.

    3. Tevez will not add anything extra in attack.

    Mixed Feelings:

    1. Demi – who is in good form and his experience will be
    2. Lamela – Hope he will come back stronger but good decision to keep him out.
    3. Gaitan – Inclusion of Gaitan could have added another dimension in attack but Lavezzi’s experience will count.
    4. Willy – Sabella ignored him when he was the best but now tata ignored him for a reason.

He’s gotta be kidding me… Where’s the defense?
The Nat’l Team had an awesome defensive system during the WC under Sabella’s management, and… now this dep’t is all confused again.
We’ve been playing very few friendly matches, and against very weak opponents. Our players got few chances to gather up till CA 15 starts… How can they get used to new practice and tactical schemes? How can we be favorites to anything?

  55. Profile photo of Hilton Neves

Excuse me. Huh? About the conclusion: you can’t be serious.
The article is very good, nice data, videos and points made. However, there are several Argentine players who stand above Lionel Messi, easily.

You got Kempes, René Houseman, Bochini, Sívori, Brown, Mancuso, El Cholo, Bertoni…
… For Lío to turn out as the “second best for his country”, he’s gotta… win something! Hasn’t done it in seven years. Guys I mentioned have shown to be clutcher than Messi. @ least a Copa América they have won.

Argentina has also got a fantastic player, although belonging to a more romantic context: El Trinche Carlovich. Even not having played for Natl’ Team, he was regarded as an outstanding midfielder. Legendary.

The Barça man got too much hype, and delivers too little.

Football during maradona’s time was tougher than current.( Ex : Maradona’s time defender can tackle from behind). Also Maradona’s achievement is much higher than Messi’s . Not only world cup, he made Napoli champion with out having big name his team. However messi always played along with big player like ( iniesta/Xavi/ etc etc ) .
To me Maradona is a legend. But Messi is a very good player. If won world cup then only he can be a legend.

    • Profile photo of Nitin Soman

Football now is even more tougher, defenders are faster, stronger, fitter … tactically teams are more equipped, due to technology coaches have access to each and every minute detail and videos of opposing teams, individuals play a lot more football having access to all kind of coaching and conditioning experts and adaptability to the game is a lot more higher… so the argument that football was tougher in olden ages… is a myth.. football is as tough as it was in olden times.

      • Profile photo of Mukul Das

What ever point u said above is applicable for all teams / all positions …. now a days defender can not tackle, the way they used tackle old days. Messi is a great player , but not legend like maradona/pele/Zidane/Ronaldihno … And football is a team game … If individual success makes any one greatest player, then u are contradicting the spirit of the game ….

In 2010 barca and Argentina didn’t win single trophy, still he got best player award.

Messi needs good supports ( which he has been getting like xavi/iniesta etc etc ) that’s why he is not maradona.

        • Profile photo of Nitin Soman

I guess you didnot read the reply.. your answer is amateurish at best…

        • Profile photo of Nitin Soman

what you say.. contradicts yourself… none of the points you mentioned above makes sense.. on first hand you talk about legends.. then you talk about team game.. they are contradictory by nature.. so when you talk about one.. you contradict the other… so i hope you take a side if you want to sound meaningful.. what has barca winning trophies to do with best player awards.. ha ha .. that is even more ridiculous.. but to tell you something even more ridiculous 2010-11 was one of barca’s best years.. if you are referring to 2011-12, they were 2nd in the league, won copa del ray, club world cup and super cup. for the rest you need to read my replies correctly..

    • Profile photo of Nitin Soman

Another big myth that great footballers can play without a good midfield and a great defenses.. It is created from ignorance of not knowing football or underestimating it. Football at each time produces great along with a really good supporting staff and always history remembers the greats but not their supporting staff.. as time will go people will forget about xavi and iniesta as they forgot Buruchagga and enrique.
Another bubble to break.. messi now plays a deeper midfield or deep wing role and doesnot have xavi and iniesta to provide him the passes, but still he has managed to keep his scoring the same.. have you wondered why.. or in your ignorance, jealousy and self hatred let the details go..
Another thing messi is so versatile, that you put him any position, forward, wing, deep midfield he always seems to be the best in the pitch.. such is his genius that on a serious day messi pulls of somethings from nothings.. be it defense splitting passes through a bunch of players… a beautiful lob assist.. a spectacular long pass.. a dribble beating cutting slitting through a bunch of defenders.. a strike so wonderful looking straight out a video game…

    • Profile photo of Hilton Neves

Mukul Das, you’re right. I definitely agree with you, soccer was way tougher in the 70’s and 80’s. Particularly if you played as a striker or as an attacking midfielder.
      _______
Sorry, Barça fans… Lío can’t hold a candle to Diego. He just can’t. We all saw it last July & June. Diego jumped the gun, unfortunately. When he told us La Pulga would be his successor, he really got ahead of himself. Imho, CR7 plays better than Lío.
      _______
Nitin Soman, nowadays you may have less space to carry out your moves on the field. I’ll give you that. But if you’re skillful and manage to avoid fouls, you’ll be able to do an assist or shoot on goal. Whereas in the 70’s and 80’s, many defenders would throw themselves @ your legs to crush them; they’d try to destroy your moves, even if the ball remained behind, not touched.

  59. Messi right now he is the best !!!

  60. If I compare both of them I will compare like this way…

    1) Dribbling – I will rate both 10/10

    2) Passing – I will rate Messi Higher.

    3) Power – Off-course Maradona.

    4) Scoring – Equally good for me.
Stat will say Messi but I will keep them in same level although I have never seen maradona missing 1 on 1.
Also Maradona’s playing area was from No 5 to No 10 or beyond whereas Messi’s playing area is restricted from No 10 to N0 9. So Maradona’s area of operations was actually large.

    5) Physical Strength – Again equal for me.

Most of us will say Maradona but I will say both are equally strong. Messi is a damm tough guy although he may not be in the receiving end of many hard tackles like Maradona.
But Only in 1988-89 Maradona played 50 games/season (once 41 matches) rests are less than 40 whereas Messi is playing 55+ games for the last 6 seasons (only last season he played 46).
It’s not easy to stay in top physical condition after playing so many games.

As a player I will say both are equally good but what made Maradona the best ever because of the presence of a LEADER in him and his ‘never-say-die’ attitude.. Maradona was way above the rest. Messi may have won 22 trophies in club level but he always had a great team to support him whereas Maradona never got that support, still he delivered.

No doubt when Messi will stop playing he may even reach 1000 goals (whereas maradona scored 350 goals) but still Maradona had something special in him that made him the best ever.

Whether Messi will win World Cup or not but people will still love Maradona because of the INNOCENT CHILD inside him.

  61. This article reminds me 1 Hindi movie line

‘To be immortal no need to live for 100 years, in a day you can do something spectacular that people will remember you for 100 years’

This man, the God maradona, took 1 month and 7 matches.

  62. Messi lacks leadership quality and the said ‘never-say-die attitude’.. I think that’s a big difference between them!

    • Profile photo of Hilton Neves

Anees, you’re right, man! During the match at Maracanã while playing Germany, for many moments he looked like a pecho frío. Well… if he can’t or doesn’t wanna have that leadership, why doesn’t he hand the captain armband over to Mascherano?

  63. Pele’s, Garrincha’s, Ronaldo’s, Ronaldhino’s, Kaka’s and Neymar’s will come and go however these two will stay in our heart forever

  64. Profile photo of VamosAlbiceleste

    Long way to go kids….vamos

  65. Arsenal would be best for him if he moves in EPL. Arsene may not help him to win Ballon d’Or but he can help him to be a better player. Also Arsenal lacks a genuine striker. Arsenal and Dybala both can help each other.

  66. Profile photo of El Principe

Talented kid hope he will have a great season at Sao Paulo. Vamos

When you see Messi coming down to his own half in search of ball, it is crystal clear there is an issue with Argentina’s midfield, and it is true, we have not found a good central midfielder after Riquelme.

Messi has played the role of AM and forward for Argentina during the qualifiers. But expecting him to do that also for the most tightly fought national football tournament and come successful is asking too much. He is the most marked player in the world now and when he has the ball in the midfield, the forward lines are standing still without making any movement. To whom does he pass the ball then. This is the player with a kind of vision which is unparalleled in the world of football, but others in fab 4 dont give enough movement. They need to learn to use the space vacated by Mess’s markers.

No wonder, Argentina is looking bad so far. If Messi has to take care of Argentina’s creativity, he wont score goals, that is what he did in 2010, but then all complained he cannot score. Now he scores, the complaint is he dont create?? Iran had two players on him always, in addition to the Zonal marking tactics to add 2 more players on him. If you are expecting such a player to do everything, then I am sorry for Messi.

  90. Profile photo of Sabarish Palghat

I reckon Romero is gonna do well this time around; may be the selection of Rojo over Basanta cud be a matter of concern……

    • Profile photo of VamosAlbiceleste

If Sabella is advised Rojo to sit back and play like a Center back..I am sure he will do well. But he try to attack as he is playing as left-back then he will just keep the flank open and could leads to disaster for us.
